Raising Our Skills with a Master Bedroom Addition in La Crescenta
In La Crescenta, we had the opportunity to work on a master bedroom addition that was as challenging as it was rewarding. The homeowners had a clear vision, they wanted more space in their bedroom and dreamed of a luxurious and relaxing bathroom. The property was on a lot with a slope, which added complexity to the project. We were nonetheless still excited to take on the challenge.
The sloped land allowed us to show our expertise in complicated builds. We worked closely with our architect and designer to structure and design a room that would not only be beautiful but also keep in mind the slope. We designed the bedroom to follow the slope and made a stable foundation. This will pay off 10 years down the line when their bathroom floor tiles shifted very little. We also added large windows to take advantage of the stunning views living on a slope naturally created. With the space left over, we added a custom walk-in closet and a spa-like bathroom.
Throughout the project, we communicated regularly with the homeowners. We wanted to make sure they were getting exactly what they wanted. When we completed the project, the homeowners were thrilled with their new space and it was due to all our communication throughout the project. This project taught us that taking on difficult projects would make us better contractors. The secret to building with quality in mind is to think about what would make the build last for a long time.
How We Brought Sunshine to a Bathroom Remodel in Eagle Rock
In Eagle Rock, we faced a bathroom remodel that particularly stands out. The space was cramped and outdated. It felt dark and uninviting. We could tell that the homeowners were frustrated. Like most homeowners, they wanted a bathroom that was not only functional but also a place that let them relax. The problem was clear to us. We had to transform this small, uninspired bathroom into a luxurious, spacious, and bright bathroom. Simple enough!
We started out by changing the layout to maximize space and light. We then carefully selected materials with the homeowner that would brighten the room. Lighter tiles and fixtures that reflect natural light, we were really using our noggins. We set out to make the bathroom flow functionally but also feel beautiful as soon as you walk in. The final touch was installing a glass door shower with sleek, modern fixtures, which opened up the space even more. The transformation was noticeable.
What once felt cramped and dark became a bright, airy room. The homeowners were thrilled with the result! And we were proud to have turned a challenging space into a stunning, functional bathroom that exceeded expectations. This project reinforced our belief that even the most challenging spaces can be reimagined into something functional and glamorous. It’s experiences like these that continue to strengthen our reputation as a top general contractor in Los Angeles.
Navigating Permit Challenges in a Historic Echo Park Remodel
We’re currently working on an exciting project: a complete house remodel in Echo Park. The house, built in the 1900s, is situated on a picturesque palm tree-lined street with the Los Angeles skyline as its backdrop. Echo Park is one of my favorite neighborhoods, filled with big, beautiful homes that reflect LA’s rich culture. However, this project has its challenges, particularly with securing permits from the city.
With historic homes, it’s often tricky to verify the last time renovations were properly permitted. Our client decided to handle the demolition herself, which we sometimes allow to help save costs. But this decision brought unexpected complications. During inspection, the city flagged the windows as non-compliant with current LA codes. Although we weren’t contracted to update the windows, the inspector wouldn’t let us proceed because the permit records didn’t align with the current condition of the windows. The last known permit was from 1983, and this discrepancy posed a significant hurdle.
To resolve the issue, we brought in our engineer and architect to reassess the situation. They resubmitted our proposal to the city and certified that the home’s structure was sound with the existing window framing. Although this process was time-consuming and frustrating, we managed to navigate it successfully. This experience taught us the importance of clearly communicating the potential risks to our clients when they choose to handle demolition themselves. It’s a lesson we’ll carry forward to ensure smoother projects in the future.
